I have to give my husband credit for finding this one! He surprised me with a visit here last Mother’s Day, and I couldn’t have been more impressed with his find and the creativity of this cute Lil place! I mean, their tagline is “peace, love & pickles”….what’s not to adore?!
Located just 16 minutes over the bridge from South Philly is Elsie’s, where they use giant dill pickles instead of bread and rice! Elsie’s is named in honor of the owner’s grandmother and remains a sweet mom & pop shop.
I had ‘The Taylor’, which is hummus, roasted red pepper, cucumber lettuce, tomato, and red onion. It was massive and messy and oh so delicious!! It’s vegan, low carb, and gluten-free! Everything was fresh and perfect! I’ve found myself craving it often every since!
The kiddos had falafel and hummus rolls, and hubs had a Reuben roll. It was just like sushi but with a thinly sliced pickle to hold all of the goodness together. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed everything!
While there, we did complimentary pickle juice shots! It was such a perfect punch! Do you dare?
*Brine is sometimes available for patrons to bring their own bottles to take home, so bring your empties along!
The staff was all super friendly, and I love the open kitchen! We met the kick-ass owner, Katharine Jordan, and after initially writing a review, we have since become social media friends. She and her family are very entertaining and loved by many!
We pre-ordered our food an hour before they opened, and it was ready promptly when we arrived. Ex. We called at 10 am on a Saturday when they didn’t even open for business until 11 am. This is apparently normal, and the way those are the know do it! Just a heads up, they are closed Sundays & Mondays.
There’s no in-house dining, but we carried-out and had a picnic, which was perfect because that sammy is quite the marvelously messy thang!
I can’t wait to return! Totally worth the trek to Jersey!
Peace, love & pickles!
